It’s a rear differential unit that keeps power applied to both wheels as evenly as possible. A Limited Slip Differential unit will "lock up" both wheels under power but with reduced power, such as cornering, the axles are allowed to rotate independently of each other thereby reducing the tendency to scrub the rubber off your tires. LS style differentials are much safer to drive on slippery surfaces such as ice, snow or rain soaked streets. Question #2 - So then what is a "Posi-Traction" or "Traction-Lock" rear end? They are both Limited Slip Differentials. General Motors calls their unit a Posi-Traction or "Posi-trak" and Ford calls their unit a Traction-Lock or "Trak-Lok". Question #3 - Does my V6 Mustang have a "Trak-Lok" rear end? No. The 1994-2007 V6 Coupe is delivered with a 7.5" open (non-lock up) differential. The V8 Mustang GTs have an 8.8" Trak-Lok rear in the stock configuration. Question #4 - How much power will my V6 Mustang Trak-Lok rear end handle? According to most sources, the 7.5" Trak-Lok will safely handle up to 450Hp. The 8.8" Trak-Lok will handle even more. Question #5 - Will an 8.8" Trak-Lok differential fit in my stock axle assembly? No. It will not fit inside the housing. You would need to purchase an 8.8" axle assembly. Question #6 - What would I need to purchase in order to convert my stock 7.5" non-lock up to a 7.5" Trak-Lok set up? At the very least you would need the following components: 1) 7.5" Trak-Lok Differential (Ford Racing M-4204-C75). 2) Friction Modifier for proper break in (Ford Racing M-19546-A12). 3) Differential rebuild kit especially if you have over 80,000 miles on your current set up (Motive Gear P/N-21202). 4) Two quarts of 85W-140 Gear Oil (Castrol or Lucas, my favorites). Question #7 - How do I correct the speedometer for the new 3.73/4.10/etc. Ring Gear & Pinion set I've had installed? On the 1994-1998 models (V6+GT) you would install a 21 or 23 tooth speedo gear in the transmission. This takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. The 1999-2007 models (V6+GT) require the use of a flash tuner (SCT, Diablosport, Accel, Superchips, etc) to recalibrate the speedometer. Ford Racing no longer produces the mechanical recalibrators used on the 1999-2004 models. Question #8 - What is the wheel bolt pattern on my Mustang? The 1994-2008 Mustang V6+GT bolt pattern is 5x114.3 with 1/2" lugs, right hand thread. More FAQs on the way! |
