The only significant difference between the 3.8L V6 and the 3.9L V6 OHV* is displacement; specifically the length of the piston stroke. The following bore, stroke and displacement information is provided for the data geeks like myself. The 1994-2003 V6 engines have a stroke of 3.390"/3.400" (depending on the data source) where as the 2004 V6 has a 3.460" piston stroke. The 1994-2004 V6 engines have a bore of 3.800"/3.810" (again depending on the data source). For the purposes of this discussion; Bore = 3.805" (the average of 3.800" +3.810"/2). Bore = area of circle (area of piston). Area of circle = Pi x r2. Pi = 3.14159 (roughly). Radius = r = (1/2 of diameter). Stroke = movement of piston up and down the cylinder. Displacement = bore x stroke. So... 1994-2003 displacement is: 232CI (231.627 to be exact) or 3.8L (3.821 to be exact); and... 2004 displacement is: 236CI (236.062 to be exact) or 3.9L (3.895 to be exact).
